Workshops, One-2-One Tutorials, Lectures and Judging
Over the years I have been asked many questions regarding my image workflow, both when I worked in the darkroom and since I moved to digital. Over time this led to extensive telephone and latterly email communications, before eventually I decided to demonstrate to people how I went about my photographic business. I now offer a full range of training and information exchange events from One-2-One tutorials on topics such as how to start using a camera to detailed tutorials and demonstrations on my processing; in both silver and digital based processes. I have lectured for many years at colleges and camera clubs across the country talking about my images, the photographic processes and given practical demonstrations, again in both the silver and digital based disciplines.
With nearly 30 years experience in photography I feel I have gained a significant amount of experience and knowledge of the capturing, processing and presentation aspects of photography. I have had significant success in both national and international photography competitions and exhibitions, as well as images used in magazines, books and on calendars and even music single and album covers. I have also carried out commissions for private companies such as landscape architects and recreational activity companies for their commercial marketing imagery.
As a result of the numerous questions and requests over the years, I am now providing workshops on location, in the studio and at home; both the participants and my own where I can discuss and demonstrate photographic techniques, tips and skills on the visualisation, capturing, processing and presentation aspects of still imagery. The workshops, tutorials and presentations give me chance to not only share my knowledge and philosophy of photography, but also some of my favourite locations too.
My digital workshops, tutorials and presentations cover how to visualise, capture and process images both in the camera and also with software packages such as Adobe Photoshop, Elements and Lightroom as well as other processing software such as Apple Aperture and Nikon Capture NX2. I also extensively demonstrate plugins such as the Niksoft applications such as Silver EFEX Pro/2 for monochrome work, Viveza 2 for light manipulation and DFine 2 for noise reduction; among others.
My silver based workshops, tutorials and presentations cover everything from how to expose and develop films to producing fine prints and even specialist printing techniques such as lith printing, toning and alternative processes such as Cyanotypes. I offer advanced workshops on specific areas such as finding your personal film speed for different film and developer combinations, along with advanced printing techniques such as pre-flashing and split grade printing on both fibre-based and resin coated papers. Over the years I have worked with 35mm, medium format as well as large format cameras and processes.
I also run workshops and tutorials on how to mount and present your final images as well as offering advice and feedback on image selections for panels for the Royal Photographic Society (RPS) and Photographic Alliance of Great Britain (PAGB) distinction schemes; for which I am affiliated and have had experience and success with.
My fees are very reasonable starting at just NZ$50 for a 1hr One-2-One introduction to digital workflow session and my location based workshops start at NZ$250 for a full day including breakfast or lunch dependent on the time of the session and I include pdf tutorial notes for all of my workshops and tutorials for participants to take away and work through at home at their own leisure. For my processing and computer based workshops I provide screen recordings from the day to take away as video tutorials for you to watch and recap on the days learnings. The videos include annotated key strokes and step-by-step workflows for easy to follow instructions. Each One-2-One tutorial is tailored to the individual, loosely based around one of three catagories for: Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced photographers.
Details of specific workshops will be posted here directly as they are announced. My workshops are limited to a maximum of 5 participants in order to ensure a high quality and personal level of tutition. If you would like me to provide a 'tailor made' workshop for your club or group of peers; please do not hesitate to contact me to discsuss your personal requirements.
If you would like to participate in any of my workshops, would like me to attend your club for a presentation or to judge a club competition or exhibition, or should you wish to have a more intimate One-to-One either on location or in front of a computer, at your place or mine covering process workflow, please feel free to contact me.
